Ondo USDY can support cash management, collateral, and settlement

Ondo USDY is useful when eligible non-US holders want yield on balances kept onchain for cash management or compatible decentralized finance (DeFi) collateral. Its note structure connects the token to Treasury-related assets, while its two versions express income differently. Accumulating USDY suits balances whose reference price can rise; rebasing rUSDY supports dollar-denominated units for compatible settlement. Either use requires the right eligibility and token support. Immediate access to another payment asset through issuer redemption depends on that route's availability and liquidity.

A USDY transfer delivers note exposure, so payment acceptance and any necessary conversion into the asset owed determine its settlement usefulness.

USDY and rUSDY for different balance requirements

USDY and rUSDY express the same underlying exposure in different units, which affects their fit for cash management and settlement. The choice concerns how income appears and how a receiving application handles that token version.

Accumulating balances

Accumulating USDY reflects income through an increasing reference price. That lets a holding accrue value without distributing additional tokens to the wallet. Cash management can work with this format when the goal is retaining Treasury-related yield onchain. The token count alone therefore doesn't describe the holding's dollar value.

Rebasing balances

rUSDY changes the accounting unit while preserving exposure to the USDY that backs it.

Reference value

The rebasing version maintains a $1 reference price by increasing token balances as yield accrues. This format suits compatible settlement accounting in dollar-denominated units.

Wrapped backing

rUSDY represents USDY held in a wrapper contract. Wrapping changes how the position is expressed. It doesn't add another pool of underlying assets, so USDY locked in the wrapper and the associated rUSDY represent the same economic value.

When is a yield-bearing note useful?

A yield-bearing note fits an onchain task when continued income matters and its access and liquidity conditions suit the obligation.

  • An onchain cash reserve fits accumulating USDY when a changing reference price suits the accounting. Income appears in the note's value. A balance that must already be spendable in another asset has an additional conversion requirement.
  • In a supported lending market, USDY can back borrowing while continuing to accrue yield. That fit requires collateral support for the exact token and network, alongside acceptable borrowing terms.
  • Settlement in rUSDY fits a recipient that accepts rebasing dollar-denominated units. The transfer delivers note exposure to that recipient. An obligation specifying another asset requires an accepted conversion arrangement.
  • A fixed-deadline payment that specifically requires USDC is a poor fit for reliance on USDY redemption. Insufficient USDC swapper liquidity can block immediate conversion. USDC already available for payment removes that conversion dependency.

Permissionless transferability describes how a token can move. It doesn't grant a recipient direct-redemption approval or change the asset that a payment contract accepts.

Borrowing against yield-bearing collateral

USDY can continue accruing yield when a compatible lending protocol accepts it as collateral for borrowing. The protocol determines the collateral treatment and borrowing terms. Collateral acceptance depends on the specific protocol, deployment network, and token version.

Borrowing interest is a separate cost from USDY's yield. The note's quoted rate describes income on the collateral, and the lending market determines interest on the debt. Its collateral rules and the position's state also govern borrowing capacity.

Payment acceptance and the asset delivered

Settlement with rUSDY delivers a yield-bearing note to a recipient that accepts the token and its applicable restrictions. Permissionless transfers don't automatically convert that balance into USDC or bank dollars. A payment service can use USDY only within the networks and token versions that it supports. Recipient acceptance determines whether a transfer satisfies the payment obligation.

Eligibility and the issuer behind the note

Eligibility limits USDY acquisition and redemption to qualifying non-US persons, with further jurisdictional and investor-status restrictions. The prohibitions cover US persons, activity for their benefit, and buy orders originating within the United States. Other jurisdictions also face prohibitions, and some locations impose professional or qualified-investor requirements.

USDY entered the Ondo Stocks umbrella on December 15, 2025. Ondo Global Markets (BVI) Limited issues current tokens. Earlier obligations may name Ondo USDY LLC, so the issuance matters when identifying the governing terms and redemption route.

Direct access requires onboarding, including the applicable identity or business checks and wallet approval. Those product requirements differ from OUSG, whose fund investors must meet both accredited-investor and qualified-purchaser criteria. Receiving a transferable token doesn't itself complete the issuer's onboarding process.

Redemption routes and usable liquidity

Redemption usefulness depends on the issuance and the asset required at the end of the process. Current USDY web-app purchases follow Ondo Stocks terms. For that route, redemptions can deliver USDon, the platform's native stablecoin, or USDC through automatic conversion when the swapper has sufficient liquidity. Atomic settlement describes the exchange of tokens and the redemption asset within the same transaction.

Immediate USDC redemption through the Ondo Stocks route requires sufficient USDC liquidity in its stablecoin swapper. Direct use of the standalone swapper also requires whitelisting. That separate access requirement shouldn't be confused with automatic conversion included in a supported mint or redemption.

The bank-wire route for Ondo USDY LLC obligations requires a non-US bank account and bank details before processing. Current Ondo Stocks redemptions don't support USD bank wires.

Yield and the limits of a cash substitute

USDY's yield rate changes under its governing terms, which makes the holding period relevant to cash-management expectations. Ondo sets the annual percentage yield (APY) monthly. A displayed annualized rate doesn't fix future income for the life of a holding. Daily accrual concerns the note's economics; it doesn't promise uninterrupted access to a different payment asset.

Backing can include short-term US Treasuries, iShares Short Treasury Bond ETF shares, or bank demand deposits, depending on issuance date. The note gives economic exposure; holders don't acquire rights to receive the underlying Treasuries. Reserve attestations can inform assessment of that backing, while redemption availability still follows the applicable route's conditions. Moving the token into another application doesn't change the legal claim behind it.

Before you start with Ondo USDY

Is staking required to earn USDY yield?

Staking isn't required to accrue USDY's own yield. Holding USDY provides the note exposure, and the accumulating version reflects income through its reference price. Placing the token in another protocol concerns a separate use of the asset.

When does an rUSDY wallet balance update?

rUSDY rebases when the USDY reference price updates each business day. Daily yield accrual and visible wallet updates follow different schedules, so the displayed balance can stay unchanged between price updates.

Can USDY use the Ondo Token Bridge on every network where it is issued?

Ondo Token Bridge supports USDY transfers among Arbitrum, BNB Chain, Ethereum, Mantle, Sei, Solana, and Tempo. Its supported routes cover a subset of USDY's native deployments. Transfers need a supported source and destination pair; a token's native presence on a network alone doesn't make that network available through this bridge.

Does bridging reduce the number of USDY tokens received?

Ondo Token Bridge doesn't deduct a fee from the USDY token amount. Standard source-chain gas and cross-chain delivery fees still apply, with both charged in the source network's native token. A wallet therefore needs the native token to cover those charges as well as the USDY that it sends.

How long can a USDY bridge transfer take?

Ondo Token Bridge transfers normally take 1-30 minutes, depending on the chain path. Network congestion may delay delivery for up to 24 hours. This transfer window applies to the bridge's supported routes. It isn't a timing promise for issuer redemption, a bank transfer, or a receiving application's acceptance of collateral.

Are USDY minting and redemption supported on Sui or Aptos?

Eligible users must contact Ondo to mint or redeem USDY on Sui or Aptos, and each transaction has a $5 000 minimum. The same condition applies on Stellar, the XRP Ledger, and Noble. That figure is a dollar minimum, not a requirement to transfer 5 000 USDY tokens, and it doesn't establish the threshold for other networks or methods.

May an eligible recipient receive USDY before completing onboarding?

Eligible recipients can receive USDY without completing issuer onboarding first. Jurisdictional and other transfer restrictions continue to apply. Direct minting or redemption requires its own onboarding and approval, so an incoming transfer and access to issuer conversion are separate permissions.
